A senior intelligence official said a Russian campaign in the U.S. “is something we’re looking very closely at,” but clarified that the intelligence community was not stating it has “definitive proof” of either an ongoing or planned Russian operation. “But even the hint of something impacting the security of our election system would be of significant concern,” the official told the Post, speaking on condition of anonymity. “It’s the key to our democracy, that people have confidence in the election system.”
The revelations about the investigations, and the insight into concerns regarding Russian operations, come weeks after the Democratic National Committee and cybersecurity firms said the Russian government was behind a hack that led to the release of thousands of DNC emails.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied that his government had a role in the DNC attack. “There’s no need to distract the public’s attention from the essence of the problem by raising some minor issues connected with the search for who did it,” Putin told Bloomberg News on Thursday. “But I want to tell you again, I don’t know anything about it, and on a state level Russia has never done this.”

One concern for officials going forward is cybersecurity specifically on Election Day—when Americans cast their ballots for the next U.S. president. Voting operates on the county and state levels, which means it’s impossible to make sure security is high in all areas where ballots are cast, election officials and law enforcement officials told The Washington Post. Electronic ballots from voters overseas are also worrying election officials.
